PS3 Jailbreak

PlayStation Jailbreak, often known as PS Jailbreak, is a USB chipset that allows unauthorised gameplay of homebrew PlayStation 3 games and commercial game backup to the user's hard drive. It bypasses the security check by using a memory exploit which occurs with USB devices that allows the execution of unsigned code. One of the most popular pieces of homebrew software used with the device is Backup Manager, which allows users to dump and then run games from the hard drive of the PlayStation 3, or from an external USB drive. Backup Manager can also be used to run homebrew apps that are created to run in native mode.
There are many similar devices to the PS Jailbreak, such as the open sourced versions (eg. PSgroove, PSfreedom), although the user will ensure that the PlayStation 3 firmware is 3.41 or lower as the version 3.42 patches the flaw on the PlayStation device, thus disabling PS Jailbreak access.
PS Jailbreak can be used to or encourages usage of:
  • Third-party, or homebrew, programs and games to be run on the PS3, such as the PS3 FTP server.
  • Backup PS3 game discs to either the Internal Hard Drive on the console, or to an external USB hard drive using a external software.

 Legality

  • PS Jailbreak was outlawed in Australia as it was considered to be in violation of copyright law. The ban states that PS Jailbreak cannot be imported, distributed to another person or offered to the public.
  • Sony has started lawsuits in several other countries and territories like the US, Europe and Asia to block its sale. These are filed against retailers from selling the device
